For no good reason I've ended up with a cold war hack, in the shape of a 1980 CZ250 "sport"!
It had been resting for 34 years, last tax disc 1982. Took it for it's first ever MOT yesterday, it rides nice and burbles along quite happily, not sure about the sport moniker though! Thanks to Bobb for help with the parts.
The 250 engine isn't the worst choice amongst those engines coming from Strakonice... The cast iron barrels are definitely done to a higher standard than the later ally barrels on the 350ies (638, 639, 640).
And if you're a bit handy with a die-grinder and a welder, you can run it with two Mikuni carbs from a RD 250/350, which makes starting a lot easier. (You can also run them with just one Mikuni, still heaps better than a clapped out Jikov carb.)
There's some spannies available for the late 350ies (especially Tramp), which can be altered to fit the older engine. And from the same model there's a box section swingarm available, which should be a straight swap. (At least on the 350ies, but I think the swingarm is identical...)
Hi Greg, thanks for all the info but it's running quite well at the moment, even with the standard carb! I may think about a single mikuni in the future though. Cheers, Andy.
